Our Library history
Penetanguishene Public Library has a long history of serving the community.
The Carnegie Library – 1907
In 1907, Penetanguishene received a grant of $13,000 (US) from the Carnegie Foundation, established by American businessman Andrew Carnegie, to build a public library.
The original Carnegie Library was constructed on Simcoe Street, designed by architect Charles P. Baird.
Expansion and Today’s Library
In 1995, the Library was greatly expanded with a new addition under the supervision of architect Peter Archer. The project tripled the size of the original Carnegie building, creating the modern Penetanguishene Public Library you see today.
